Ric Leahy

Principal Consultant and Executive Coach

Ric is an exceptional facilitator and executive coach with over 25 years management and leadership experience across a range of military and civilian roles. Ric leverages his extraordinary real world experience in leadership roles to work with LTA in helping organisations build better teams and leaders using innovative methods that combine current theory, illuminating examples, and experiential learning.

Ric has more than 21 year’s professional military experience as a manager and leader of military and cross-functional teams. His experience includes major unit command; three separate deployments on active service in Iraq, East Timor and Cambodia; exchange duty with the United States Navy; and two years as the research officer to the Chief of Navy.

Since leaving the military in 2007 Ric worked with a range of clients including retail and investment banking, financial services, creative industries, not for profits and major Federal and State public sector departments. Additionally Ric regularly works with Melbourne Business School as the Program Director and Lead Facilitator delivering major national leadership development programs.

Ric is a graduate of the University College of the University of New South Wales completing a first class honours degree in English Literature. He has also completed an MBA through Queensland University of Technology, and more recently an Executive Masters in applied Neuroleadership. As an officer in the Royal Australian Navy, Ric was honoured as the Peter Mitchell Officer of the Year in 1991, as the Queen’s Medallist in 1993, and with a Conspicuous Service Cross in 2003.

Ric’s work is characterised by enthusiasm, professionalism and a level of emotional and intellectual challenge that engages participants and allows them to apply their insights to achieve real impact at a personal and professional level.

Debunking Leadership Presence

Presence is a common leadership development theme in executive coaching. I have often wondered why it comes up so frequently and why we struggle to define it adequately. What I have learnt through my coaching work is that rather than provide a precise definition, I ask the coachee and their line manager what they understand it to be.
